Bears Offense is TOASTPosted by gibby in Ron Turner, Rex Grossman, NFL, Lovie Smith, Kansas City Chiefs, Gibby McCaleb, Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears, Brian Griese |
Just about everyone in the windy city, and for that matter almost the entire national media, has clamored for Rex Grossman's head and this week, it looks like their wish was granted. I really think they are all looking in the wrong direction.
Bears fans can officially start commiserating with Ravens fans at this point. Face it, whether you are a Bears fan or not, it's painful to watch an amazing defense be wasted by an inept offense but that has been the situation in Chicago for the past year and the situation in Baltimore for much longer. My partner Stephenwill gladly explain that to you while steam pours out of his ears like some cartoon character that ate the spicy pepper Bugs Bunny snuck into his ham sandwich. Did anyone look at the Bears offense last year and think these guys are Super Bowl caliber? No. They stunk but won games thanks to their defense most of the time.
So what does head coach Lovie Smith do in the off season? He lets go his starting running back, Thomas Jones and signs not one but two high profile defensive free agents. That's it.
What? Are you kidding? So Smith is in essence saying "Our offense is fine but our defense needs help." Did I watch a different team last year?
It's so easy to blame Grossman for the team's woes yet I really don't think Griese will fare much better and he could actually be worse. There is a reason he didn't stick in either Denver or Tampa Bay. And last year, Griese threw twice as many interceptions as he did touchdowns and had a 62 QB rating. This year will be different thanks to all the improvements made to the offense...oh, wait a sec. Never mind. Has basketball season started yet? The Bulls are supposed to be real good this year.
Thankfully, the Bears play the Lions this weekend whose defense made McNabb look like an NCAA quarterback playing a Division I-AA school last weekend. No one will really know the truth until the Bears head up to Green Bay the following week.
That is not to say that I disapprove of the Bears making the change at quarterback but for me, this had more to do with the team's morale than it said about Griese being a better option. I think the team has lost faith in Grossman on both sides of the ball and thusly, lost faith in themselves because they looked beaten and humiliated by the end of the third quarter against Dallas.
Grossman has made some bad decisions, there is no doubt about that but there are plenty of other things to look at for Chicago's offensive troubles.
Cedric Benson is averaging a whopping three yards per carry that certainly isn;thelping but other than not doing anything to improve the offense in the off season, it's time to look real close at Ron Turner.
The Bears came out of halftime in the Dallas game tied 3-3. In the second half, Grossman threw only one deep ball, a 52 hook-up to Desmond Clark which set up the Bears second offensive touchdown of the season. In the prior week against Kansas City, the Bears only threw passes of over 15 yards three times in the whole game.
Ron Turner, the Bears offensive coordinator and secretly Norv's younger brother, has some serious explaining to do, and not like Lucile Ball had some "splane-ing" to do to Ricky Ricardo for hiding out at the club posing as a bongo player.
Seriously, watch the tape. Rex Grossman is throwing all sorts of short out patterns and curls along the sideline. Because of the timing involved, generally speaking, these patterns are not check-downs. They are usually primary routes meaning Grossman probably isn't the one choosing to throw these dumpy little passes. Those are the plays that are being called by Ron Turner. And as anyone who watches football knows, they are among the hardest patterns to throw because they are so easily jumped by the corners and when they are jumped, half of those get returned for touchdowns.
Grossman clearly isn't Joe Montana yet he is being asked to play a short, controlled passing game which is not what he does best. Rex can air it out deep with the best of them, yet they aren't calling those plays. Against a weak Chief defense, you only throw the ball deep three times the entire game? Against a Cowboys defense that had given up tons of deep plays, you only call one deep shot in the second half when you come out of the locker room tied 3-3?
Or maybe I'm wrong. Maybe Griese is the next Troy Aikman and that was overlooked by both Mike Shanahan and John Gruden. And as John Lovitz might say, "Yeah, yeah, that's the ticket. And Griese is married to, um...Morgan Fairchild!" But if Griese is not the answer, it's long past time to start looking at that coach's booth and specifically Ron Turner.
