6:40 – MLB
Tampa Bay Rays (Shields) @ Seattle Mariners (Hernandez)

James Shields is projected to outduel Felix Hernandez in a battle of AL aces.  While King Felix should post better strikeout totals, Shields is projected for nearly half a run fewer in 6+ innings leading the Rays to wins in 55% of simulations.

7:05 – NHL – Larger Victory Margin
Pittsburgh Penguins (vs. Flyers)
Detroit Red Wings (@ Blue Jackets)

Both the Penguins and Red Wings are on the verge of clinching their respective first round series.  The Pens get to host at home while the Red Wings are still in Columbus for Game 4.  Both teams are actually favored in the exact same number of simulations (56.2%) but the Pens are scoring slightly more goals with a slight edge in victory margin.  The Pens are beating the Flyers by 0.4 goals while the Red Wings are winning by 0.3 goals.  This doesn’t look like a great pick overall as neither team is favored by a full goal in simulations.

7:07 – MLB
Texas Rangers (Millwood) @ Toronto Blue Jays (Richmond)

Kevin Millwood has pitched well this season, but Scott Richmond is expected to match him according to AccuScore.  The Blue Jays are winning 54% of simulations at home and are the moneyline and side value pick.  The Jays are projected to make much more contact against the Rangers striking out 1.8 fewer times on average.

8:00 – NBA
Boston Celtics @ Chicago Bulls

The Celtics have had a hard time dealing with the young athletic Bulls.  Boston are still the favorites, but are projected to win just 51.5% of simulations and just 1 point favorites.  The second half Game 2 version of Ray Allen must show up for Boston to continue to win.  He is projected for just under 21 points on 44% shooting.

8:05 – MLB
Los Angeles Dodgers (Billingsley) @ Houston Astros (Rodriguez)

This pick is an interesting case, one that I can’t remember seeing on AccuScore.  The Astros are the moneyline and side value favorite winning 51% of simulations.  The Dodgers however are scoring more runs and are averaging 0.2 more per game with more hits and homers.  This is probably because the potent L.A. offense is posting bigger scoring totals in simulated wins while the Astros are squeezing by fewer runs in their own simulated wins.  I would stay away.

10:40 – NBA
Los Angeles Lakers @ Utah Jazz

This isn’t quite the slam dunk most people might think.  The Jazz are legitimately bad on the road, but they are equally good at home.  Utah beat the Lakers at home the one time they met in the regular season.  Utah is winning 49% of simulations and are losing by just a point on average.  The Lakers are still the favorite, but don’t automatically assume the Jazz will be swept away in this first round series.
