Andrew Bogut Injury Impact

Is Andrew Bogut more valuable than Michael Redd? It is certainly possible for the Bucks as both star players are now likely out for the season crippling Milwaukee’s chance for a run at the postseason.

Fans in Milwaukee have little to cheer about.  The Packers failed to make the playoffs, the Badgers underachieved on the football field and aren’t serious title contenders on the court, and now the Bucks are once again headed south.

Star guard Michael Redd had already was lost for the season, and possibly longer due to a torn ACL suffered two weeks ago.  The Bucks though held steady in AccuScore’s playoff forecast remaining with the eighth best chance of reaching the playoffs in the East.  Without Redd, their hold was tenuous but they were the odds on favorite to win the final playoff spot due to improvements made by new head coach Scott Skiles.

However, the news came out Wednesday that center Andrew Bogut will miss at least eight weeks with a stress fracture in his back.  Milwaukee can kiss its dreams a playoff spot and an improved season goodbye.  The Bucks have now fallen behind Chicago in our projections, while the Nets, Raptors, Knicks, and Pacers have all crept closer by percentage points in our playoff odds.

While Charlie Bell and Ramon Sessions can complete an adequate facsimile of Redd in the backcourt, the Bucks have no replacement for Bogut in the post.  Dan Gadzuric and Francisco Elson are borderline posts in the NBA as it is, but one or the other will be starting and playing significant minutes in every game through the end of the season.

The Bucks still have an outside shot at the playoffs, but I wouldn’t count on Skiles’ crew playing past the regular season.  The only thing keeping them in the race is the general ineptitude of the Eastern Conference outside of the top three teams.
